Now that Rufio’s gone, Matt Rogers didn’t win American Idol, and boy band O Town is now defunct, what’s the next big thing to come out of Rancho Cucamonga, California? The answer is Rancho Cucamonga’s own, Fiasco!. Fiasco! is a three-piece pop/rock band that’s ready to turn some faces with their newest 17-song full length (available today). Not sure if this will make a great Christmas present? Check out For the Sound’s EXCLUSIVE stream of “Cliché To Say”.

Fiasco! Interview
November 28, 2008

Let's get this interview started by stating your name and what you do in Fiasco!.

Brandon Forsberg: Drums

Daniel Durston:
Bass Guitar, Piano, Vocals

Brent Schneiders: Guitar and Vocals

Could you give a quick summary of how Fiasco! got together, and what kind of music you guys play for somebody that isn't familiar with you guys?

Brandon: The foundation of fiasco started around 2000 where Brent and I got together in his front yard and jammed. We have been playing together ever since. We had gone through several bass players but it wasn’t till 2007 were we found Daniel.

Daniel: 7 years ago the three of us met when entered to perform at a battle of the bands.  Since then the three of us had kept in contact and became good friends.  In the summer of 2007 Brent and Brandon were still jamming together in a band but could never keep a steady bassist. When looking to audition the newest member of the group, I, being a friend and a fan of their music, quickly took up the opportunity to be apart of something so life changing.  All it took was one jam session and the three of us hit it off and have been a strong 3 piece ever since. Our band plays fun music.  Upbeat rhythms and melodies that have great meaning and depth in every word.  I like to call it "piano rock".

Brent: We're from Rancho Cucamonga, CA. We were called Understated for many years and we played a lot of shows with Daniel's band Unforgotton. Shortly after Daniel joined in 2007 we played a show with Mike Herrera's side project, Tumbledown. He mentioned to us that the name needed an upgrade. We took his advice and Fiasco! was born. Brandon thought of the name. I like to call our music pop punk rock.

Your new full length "A Greater Life In Tales" obviously has a wider range of sounds compared to your last EP. Who were your influences?

Brandon: I can’t say for sure who I’m truly influenced by but lately I’ve been listening to The Killers, Coldplay, Alkaline Trio, Angels and Airwaves, Brand New, Cobra Starship, and etc.

Daniel: A lot of the time our influence on how our music turns out, ends up the way it is because of the experiences we've been through.  Our life shapes every mood and every musical style that you hear on our new album.  From relationships to the loss of loved ones, from the feeling of depression and also from never feeling more alive. Musically we're influenced by such bands as:  The Beatles, Queen, The Rocket Summer, Fall Out Boy and Green Day.

Brent: I have always been influenced by Green Day and Blink 182. I bought their albums when I was in Junior High and they really shaped my life. They have always beenmy foundation. During the writing of this one I was listening to a lot of Kiss, Stryper, The Rocket Summer and Alkaline Trio.

There's a whoppin' 17 songs on your new CD; were there any songs you left off?

Brandon: I believe there were a few that didn’t make the final cut.

Daniel: The songs we decided to record for this new album are the songs you hear.  We have many more songs that we can't wait to get out onto CD so the world can hear more of our work.  Our songs are endless, and we continue to keep writing new songs daily and we plan to keep it that way.

Brent: I left off a good handful of songs that I wrote for a few reasons. We already had a lot to choose from and I just picked what I thought went well with the theme. Some weren't ready yet either. We picked what we felt were the strongest songs. The final cut that hits iTunes on Christmas Eve has 11 songs. The rest we are saving for an EP sometime down the road.

Here's a few either/or questions just to make it a little fun haha.

Chris Brown or N* Sync?

Daniel: N*Sync

Brandon: Both

Okay, enough of those. Back to regular questions!

How exactly does the writing process work for you guys? Like who does the majority of what?

Brandon: Brent our guitarist does the either the whole song or the foundation and then we all get together and brainstorm and finish the rest of the song. With Daniel in the band this is the first time we have had another song writer cause in the previous years it was just Brent and I writing the music but now Daniel has brought some of his songs in.

Daniel: Each of us are in charge of writing are own parts in every song.  The initial action taken when writing a new song is usually either Brent or myself will write something on our own time when at home, and when rehearsal rolls around we showcase our latest work to each other.  And then the magic happens.  Together as a band we fill in the blanks.  We open our minds and we express our creative ideas, we attempt every idea that's boiling in our brains so that in the end, neither of us held back creative flow.  And when it's all said and done, you get a brand new Fiasco! work of art.

Brent: They said it best. I always have been grateful for our chemistry. We all push each other to do better and we really support each other. It sounds crazy but it's like we can read each other minds either when it comes to writing a song or how to do things in the studio. We're all on the same page and that makes our writing environment very comfortable and exciting. All of us want to create something great and won't accept anything less than that.

You all made a cameo in the video for "Hot N Cold" from Katy Perry; do you know Katy personally, or were you just itching to be in this video because you are her biggest fans?

Daniel: It's a growing friendship...with great potential.  She just doesn't know it.

Brent: I'm definitely a big fan! We first met Katy in Fresno, CA on this past Warped Tour '08. We gave her=2 0our CD and she was way nice to us. Then a month or so later we were cast in her video just as background. We talked to her and she said she listened to the EP and liked it. I asked her, "So when do we leave for our tour together?" She laughed, but I'm still waiting for her call... She gave me a hug too in yo face Daniel!!

What was your first show like?

Brandon: well I remember some of our first shows. we played at a craft fair to a bunch of drunk people, I also remember we played at a Halloween party which only lasted 2 songs because it just got way to rowdy, I recall throwing up in my mouth from being so nervous and eating a gang of snacks. I would say our first real show was at a local coffee shop in our hometown of Rancho Cucamonga.

Daniel: Fiasco!'s first show was at a small cafe in Fullerton.  Only about 20 people showed up and it went off really well, considering I wasn't even a part of the band at the time, it was kind of like my "last test" before being asked into the band.

Brent: Fiasco!'s fist show was amazing. So much fun and a lot of energy. My first show ever though was when I was 11 years old, Brandon was on the drums and we had a random bassist. A lot of drunk people and carnival rides. I felt so cool though I knew I wanted to do this forever.

Where did the title "A Greater Life In Tales" come from?

Daniel: It's a play on words phrase we made up to describe our music and Fiasco's future as well.  Explaining that the future "entails" great success for the band, and that the stories, or "tales" told in our songs are about our past life experiences and it's only going to get better from here on out.

Here's a toughie...What is each of the band members FAVORITE FOOD?

Brandon:  I am a lover of all sorts of food but if i had to narrow it down i would say im addicted mexican food.

Daniel: SUSHI!

Brent: I can't get enough of the veggie burritos from Chipotle. I crave it everyday. We go there a lot but it's never enough haha.

What is your favorite song from your new album? Why?

Brandon: i would have to say "feel alive." it just shows so much improvement in the band and the direction were heading.

Daniel: "Wake Up".  The song is about loosing a close family member and it's in support of making the best of your life even after such a harsh tragedy.  Personally, it's what I live by:  "take this for what it is, and run with it".

Brent: I love every song we play. They all mean a lot to me which is crucial because if there's no emotion in it, there's no reason to play it. My favorite song is "Twenty Years."It's a very simple song but it's about my Mom almost passing away. I don't cry too often but every time we play it or even if I hear it I want to start balling.

Thanks for the interview! Anything else you like to say to the fans at For The Sound?

Brandon: listen to this shit or else!

Daniel: We would just like to invite everyone to join the growing revolution of Fiasco!  It's going to be such a fun and intense journey taking over the world!  You won't regret becoming a fan.

Brent: Thank you to Ryan and everyone at For The Sound for their support and thank you for reading! Check us out at www.myspace.com/fiascomusic and look out for us on iTunes on Christmas Eve! We are doing this for you so if you have any suggestions or just want to say hi, please don't hesitate to do so. Oh yeah and I'm single and straight. Lets Duet.
