The Friday Night Boys Interview

September 19th 2008

ForTheSound staff members Kaila and Emily recently got the chance to talk with Andrew of Fueled By Ramen Record's The Friday Night Boys. Hear what he has to say about touring, morning breath, and Miley Cyrus in our exclusive interview below!

Please introduce yourself and what you do in the band?

Andrew – My names Andrew Goldstein I sing and play lead guitar.

How would you describe your sound to someone that’s never heard you before?

Andrew – I’d probably say just catchy and poppy. Sort of like a mix between All American Rejects and Boys Like Girls.

How did you guys end up getting signed to Fueled By Ramen?

Andrew – Actually, we just played on TRL for this unsigned segment. I got a call from the president of Fueled By Ramen the following day, and then a month later, we we’re signed.

You guys are putting out a new EP soon, what can fans and listeners expect?

Andrew – It actually has two old songs on it, and some new songs. It’s a little more in your face, it’s a lot more fun, and a lot more fun content, no sad songs on the cd.

Who does most of the lyric and the music writing?

Andrew – I actually do everything. I do all the recording, writing lyrics, everything.

What has life been like on tour for you guys?

Andrew – It’s been pretty cool, a lot of fun. We’ve met a lot of awesome people, really cool fans and people that have listened to us for a long time as well. It’s just a really cool experience to be able to go to all these different places and be exposed to all sorts of different people.

What’s your least favorite thing about touring?

Andrew – I don’t have a home on tour, You can’t just go home and take a shower, you have to go to a hotel or a friends house. You can’t shower every day or all the time because of time issues, but I like touring just cause you get to see new stuff.

Out of the group, who’s the biggest prankster?

Andrew – Everyone likes to play pranks on me cause I worry a lot sometimes, I do joke a good amount with everyone else too. I’d have to say that Mike our guitar player is probably the biggest prankster.

Do you guys get homesick when you’re far away from home?

Andrew – Sometimes I do, we’re all from northern Virginia. I love touring, but I’ve lived there my whole life too, so it does get a little crazy. I’m used to being away from home, but everyone gets a little homesick at times I guess.

Could you tell us a bit about how you guys formed the band?

Andrew – I started the band by myself about a year and a half ago, kinda just joking around making songs, cause I really like pop music and writing new songs about how I felt and stuff that happened to me. Then I decided to form it into a full band and things just went uphill from there.

Do you have any advice for upcoming bands looking to get signed or break into the music industry?

Andrew – Just keep writing songs, cause for us I just wrote some songs and it was just fan reaction. I didn’t tour and I didn’t try to promote it just kind of happened. I think if your songs are there, some people don’t think this but I think you kind of have to look cool to the band. You just need to have good songs that people like and people can relate too.

If you weren’t in a band or in music what do you think you would be doing?

Andrew – I would be a research psychologist. I’m in college now I graduate in December with a degree in psychology. Before I found out that my band was getting signed that’s actually what I was going to do.

What are some bands or artists you are currently listening to?

Andrew – Do you want my honest truth?

I want the dirt.

Andrew – Miley Cyrus’s new cd, I do like it a lot.

What about the Jonas Brothers?

Andrew – I do love the Jonas Brothers, their cd is cool. Avril Lavigne, sorry I always have loved her and I always will, I don’t care if she’s married. Actually, to tell you the truth, Every Avenue’s cd is awesome.

As a musician how do you think the economy is affecting the music industry?

Andrew – It’s a lot harder, because everything’s electronic, all sales and stuff are done online. Touring is harder with gas prices, but I think the economy is always going to be up and down so whenever it steeps to a low point it can only go up from there.

What’s one essential personal item you have to have while touring?

Andrew – Probably, my toothbrush, because I can’t stand the feeling of going to sleep without brushing your teeth. It’s a disgusting feeling, and when you wake up and don’t brush your teeth it’s a disgusting feeling.

Do you have any favorite venues or places to play at?

Andrew – Yes, In Chicago, IL at this place called Mojo’s. The School of Rock in Hackensack, NJ is awesome. I love playing in our home town in northern Virginia.

Favorite snacks on the road?

Andrew – Vitamin Water, Pretzels, reduced fat Cheez-Itz, Apples and Subway.

Is there anything you would like to add to your fans at the readers at ForTheSound?

Andrew – Thank you to the fans, I love them, I love them all.
